As the UK&#8217;s leading kidney research charity, we are responding by scaling up.<\/p>\n<p>We will increase investment, harness new technologies, and drive progress. Too often, progress lags behind other areas of health research. We want to change that &#8211; building on strong foundations to bring new treatments and diagnostics to patients faster.\u202f\u202f <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<p>With one in ten people in the UK now believed to be living with kidney disease, and dialysis demand predicted to grow exponentially, we know we need to move faster and work smarter. We need more firepower in kidney research, through new partnerships and investment in the large, ambitious projects that can deliver real impact for patients.<\/p>\n\t<h3>Leading transformation in kidney health<\/h3>\n<p>We remain committed to funding investigator driven research across the whole spectrum of kidney health and chronic kidney disease, from discovery science to health service research and implementation science.<\/p>\n<p>But some areas of kidney health and disease are poorly served by current research efforts, and it is our job to drive focus and momentum where the need is greatest.<\/p>\n<h4>Four development areas:<\/h4>\n<p>We have selected four development areas which we will bring researchers together, work with partner organisations and launch targeted funding calls &#8211; alongside continuing to make general calls covering our core research agenda.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acute kidney injury<\/li>\n<li>Kidneys and cancer<\/li>\n<li>Kidney disease interaction with other long-term conditions and mental health<\/li>\n<li>Paediatric, rare and hereditary kidney disease<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/research\/information-for-researchers\/research-funding\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"    rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tView our research funding\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<h3>Research priorities to drive better outcomes<\/h3>\n<p>We bring together researchers, healthcare professionals and people affected kidney disease to identify where the biggest gaps are and what&#8217;s important to the kidney patient community.<\/p>\n<p>The outputs from these discussions &#8211; including reports and published papers &#8211; help shape our research priorities and are shared with the wider research community.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll continue to bring people together to highlight gaps in research and inform where change is most needed.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 id=\"fl-accordion--label-0\">Time To Act: A New Review of Kidney Health Inequalities <\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>This report makes 44 recommendations for research &#8211; from discovery science to clinical trials needed to tackle health inequalities in prevention, progression and treatment of kidney disease.<\/p>\n<p>The full list of recommendations, and an update on previous recommendations that are yet to be fully addressed, can be found in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/research\/kidney-health-inequalities\/\">full report and on our online dashboard<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 id=\"fl-accordion--label-1\">Tackling diabetic kidney disease <\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-1\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-1\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/DKD-workshop-paper-markham-lee-et-al.pdf\"> paper<\/a>, published in\u00a0Diabetic Medicine,\u00a0co-authored by\u00a0Diabetes UK,\u00a0Breakthrough T1D\u00a0(formerly JDRF) and Kidney Research UK\u00a0identified\u00a0six\u00a0themes\u00a0to tackle diabetic kidney disease (DKD).<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0paper followed\u00a0a workshop that brought together healthcare professionals, academics, charity representatives, and people living with diabetes and\/or kidney disease\u00a0and\u00a0provides\u00a0a focus\u00a0on\u00a0finding ways to\u00a0improve\u00a0kidney health for people living with\u00a0diabetes\u00a0and developing treatments to reduce\u00a0kidney\u00a0damage<\/p>\n<p>Research recommendations include: defining the barriers to achieving personalised prediction and prevention tools, identifying and reducing health inequalities which lead to underrepresentation in research and differences at all stages of care, and empowering people to understand their conditions and support self-management.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Table-Diabetic-kidney-disease-paper.pdf\">View a summary<\/a> of the six themes from the paper.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 id=\"fl-accordion--label-2\">Collectively Common: the devastating impact of rare diseases in the UK <\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-2\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-2\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>This report sets out the scale of unmet need across rare kidney diseases and makes the case for greater research investment and coordination.<\/p>\n<p>Key research recommendations include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How to improve and accelerate diagnosis<\/li>\n<li>How to understand the genetic and molecular basis of rare, hereditary and paediatric kidney conditions<\/li>\n<li>How to develop and evaluate disease-modifying and curative therapies including gene therapy and precision medicine approaches<\/li>\n<li>How to design and deliver clinical trials that work for small patient populations<\/li>\n<li>How to ensure children and young people have access to trials and emerging treatments at the earliest opportunity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/research-strategy-document-updated-address-feb-2025\/\"  target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"    rel=\"noopener\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tView our research strategy\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<h2>Got a question?
