Kidney Research UK has welcomed the latest National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance<\/a> recommending the combined use of two\u00a0different\u00a0targeted therapies to treat adults\u00a0in\u00a0England\u00a0living with a\u00a0particular\u00a0type of advanced kidney cancer.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Kidney cancer<\/a> is\u00a0the 11th\u00a0most common cause of cancer death in the UK;\u00a0some 28,485 people in England\u00a0were\u00a0diagnosed with\u00a0the condition\u00a0between 2020 and 2022.\u00a0Renal\u00a0cell\u00a0carcinoma (RCC)\u00a0is the most common type of kidney cancer,\u00a0but patients can respond to treatments differently.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Under the\u00a0guidance the NHS\u00a0will\u00a0fund\u00a0treatment\u00a0combining\u00a0avelumab\u00a0–\u00a0which helps the body to recognise and attack cancer cells\u00a0–\u00a0with\u00a0axitinib\u00a0–\u00a0a targeted therapy\u00a0that\u00a0restricts blood\u00a0flow to the\u00a0cancer\u00a0cells\u00a0and so prevents them\u00a0from developing.\u00a0This treatment can stop the cancer cells from growing as well as\u00a0forming new blood vessels.\u00a0The new guidance specifies that the\u00a0combined\u00a0treatment\u00a0should\u00a0only\u00a0be used\u00a0when\u00a0considered\u00a0to be\u00a0the most suitable\u00a0option\u00a0for adults with untreated advanced renal cell carcinoma\u00a0(RCC).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Commenting on the new guidance Alison Railton Kidney Research UK’s director of policy and public affairs said: “This recommendation offers an important\u00a0treatment\u00a0option\u00a0for\u00a0some\u00a0people living with advanced renal cell carcinoma.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

“Kidney Research UK provided comments during the consultation phase of this appraisal process.\u00a0\u00a0Some\u00a0types of RCC\u00a0can be difficult to treat, especially if diagnosed\u00a0later.\u00a0\u00a0This\u00a0is positive news\u00a0for people living with this\u00a0type of\u00a0cancer when it is untreated\u00a0and\u00a0advanced\u00a0as it may\u00a0impact\u00a0their quality of life and long-term survival.”\u00a0<\/p>\r\n
