A new treatment\u00a0option\u00a0has been approved for some adults\u00a0in England\u00a0living with active lupus nephritis<\/a> (LN).<\/p>\r\n

The\u00a0National Institute for Health and Care Excellence\u00a0(NICE)\u00a0this week\u00a0announced that\u00a0a treatment called\u00a0obinutuzumab, used together with the immunosuppressive medicine\u00a0mycophenolate mofetil, can now be offered to\u00a0some\u00a0adults with active forms of LN. Kidney Research UK contributed to the approval by nominating a clinical expert to\u00a0give\u00a0evidence to the NICE committee.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

LN is a complication of systemic lupus erythematosus\u00a0(lupus)\u00a0–\u00a0an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks\u00a0healthy tissues\u00a0including the kidneys.\u00a0LN can cause inflammation and long-term damage if not treated effectively.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Obinutuzumab\u00a0helps\u00a0reduce\u00a0the\u00a0harmful inflammation\u00a0associated with LN. By\u00a0calming\u00a0the\u00a0disease,\u00a0it\u00a0protects\u00a0an individual’s\u00a0kidneys\u00a0from further damage.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Alison Railton, Kidney Research UK’s director of policy and public affairs said: <\/strong>“This is welcome news for adults with LN who may be able to access this treatment combination.<\/p>\r\n

“We welcome\u00a0any\u00a0treatment\u00a0that may help\u00a0prevent patients needing lifelong dialysis or transplantation.<\/p>\r\n

“We were pleased that our clinical expert was able to attend and give evidence at the appraisal meeting.”\u00a0<\/p>\r\n
