If kidney failure is not prevented, it can have devastating consequences, leaving people reliant on an exhausting dialysis routine and needing a kidney transplant. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It is estimated that by 2033, the number of people in Peterborough needing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/dialysis\/\">dialysis<\/a> to stay alive could increase\u00a0nearly four-fold, taking the annual cost of the disease on the local economy from over \u00a317m to\u00a0almost \u00a336m.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>People with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/diabetes\/\">diabetes<\/a>, high <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/blood-pressure\/\">blood pressure<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/cardiovascular-disease-and-kidney-disease\/\">cardiovascular\u00a0disease<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/kidney-health-information\/about-kidney-disease\/am-i-at-risk\/obesity-and-kidney-disease\/\">obesity<\/a> are all at increased risk of developing kidney disease, while those from ethnic minority communities and lower socio-economic groups are disproportionately affected.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure itemscope itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\">\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_9289-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"two men and two women, In Peterborough shopping centre, supporting World Kidney Day\" height=\"1920\" width=\"2560\" title=\"Cllr Alex Rafiq\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_9289-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"two men and two women, In Peterborough shopping centre, supporting World Kidney Day\" height=\"1920\" width=\"2560\" title=\"Cllr Alex Rafiq\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/noscript>\n\t\t<figcaption>Cllr Alex Rafiq supporting World Kidney Day in Peterborough<\/figcaption>\n\t<\/figure>\n\t<h2>The Peterborough Project<\/h2>\n<p>The Kidney Research UK Peterborough Project has identified that Eastern European and South Asian communities in the city are particularly at risk. The project will train &#8216;peer educator&#8217; volunteers from these communities to help raise awareness of kidney health and the importance of detecting kidney disease at an earlier stage. It is hoped that the project will serve as a pilot for similar schemes across the UK.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Councillor Alex Rafiq says: &#8220;Supporting at-risk communities and prioritising early diagnosis is vital\u00a0to stopping\u00a0kidney disease in its\u00a0tracks.\u00a0That&#8217;s\u00a0why\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0getting behind Kidney Research UK&#8217;s\u00a0Peterborough Project to help\u00a0people understand their health\u00a0and\u00a0access\u00a0the right care at an early stage.\u00a0Preventing\u00a0people\u00a0from developing kidney disease\u00a0and protecting their kidney function\u00a0will\u00a0save lives.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure itemscope itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\">\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_0720.jpeg\" alt=\"Alex, sat at the kitchen table having breakfast\" height=\"1076\" width=\"722\" title=\"Alex Rafiq\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_0720.jpeg\" alt=\"Alex, sat at the kitchen table having breakfast\" height=\"1076\" width=\"722\" title=\"Alex Rafiq\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/noscript>\n\t\t<figcaption>Alex Rafiq<\/figcaption>\n\t<\/figure>\n\t<h2>Motivated by family and community<\/h2>\n<p>Spurred on to make a difference for local communities by his own family&#8217;s experiences, Alex says: &#8220;My youngest sister has duplex kidneys, and I remember as a child, she used to wake up in the night in hot sweats. Memories of her in hospital still stick with me today. Thankfully, being aware of her condition has meant she has been able to manage it with medication and a healthy lifestyle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have several health problems within\u00a0our\u00a0family, and I know there are cultural,\u00a0religious\u00a0and lingual barriers to receiving healthcare. In Peterborough we have such a diverse community and\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0vital\u00a0we reach everyone,\u00a0as kidney disease\u00a0affects us all.\u00a0<\/p>\n\t<h2>Prevention is better than cure<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;Prevention is better than cure, so it&#8217;s important to keep an eye on our health. You can get so busy with work and family that it&#8217;s easy to neglect. I didn&#8217;t realise I had high blood pressure myself until a test at a community event last year. Thankfully that has given me the opportunity to change my lifestyle before things get any worse. I&#8217;m eating a better diet and have been trying to exercise more to stay well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s\u00a0important to me that we take steps in our local communities to ensure\u00a0everyone has\u00a0access to\u00a0healthcare.
