{"id":161333,"date":"2026-03-24T09:51:23","date_gmt":"2026-03-24T09:51:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/?p=161333"},"modified":"2026-03-24T09:51:23","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T09:51:23","slug":"young-boy-with-rare-kidney-condition-joins-peterborough-march-march","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/2026\/03\/24\/young-boy-with-rare-kidney-condition-joins-peterborough-march-march\/","title":{"rendered":"Young boy with rare kidney condition joins Peterborough March March"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>A ten-year-old boy\u00a0living with a rare kidney condition is\u00a0challenging himself to complete\u00a0a major fundraising walk in Peterborough\u00a0for Kidney Research UK.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Caelan Wright will be taking part in the\u00a0five-mile\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/fundraising-events\/peterborough-march-march\/\">Peterborough March\u00a0March<\/a>\u00a0alongside friends\u00a0and family, raising funds for research that could\u00a0change\u00a0his life.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Caelan is among an estimated 18,000 people in Peterborough\u00a0who are\u00a0living with kidney disease.\u00a0The walk on Saturday 28 March at Ferry Meadows country park\u00a0is open to all,\u00a0creating an opportunity for the\u00a0community to unite in support of research to transform treatments.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" title=\"Caelan Wright\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Caelan-2.jpeg\" alt=\"Two young boys with their two mums and sister, all wearing purple tshirts\" width=\"1206\" height=\"876\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" title=\"Caelan Wright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Caelan-2.jpeg\" alt=\"Two young boys with their two mums and sister, all wearing purple tshirts\" width=\"1206\" height=\"876\" \/><\/noscript>\r\n<figcaption>Caelan Wright with mum<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<p>Caelan&#8217;s\u00a0mum, Sammy, says:\u00a0&#8220;Although Caelan&#8217;s condition is\u00a0very rare, it was caused genetically and both of my brothers live with it\u00a0too. They both needed transplants in their late\u00a0thirties\u00a0after their kidneys failed and it has had\u00a0a huge impact\u00a0on their lives.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;Nobody knows what the future holds for Caelan. It is such a rare disease and all we can compare to is what has happened to my brothers. Unless there are advances in research, it will probably be the same story and that&#8217;s very upsetting to think about.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Caelan says: &#8220;It has been scary having to spend time in hospital and I am worried about\u00a0what&#8217;s\u00a0to come. Seeing my uncles going through it has been\u00a0very hard.\u00a0I hope I can\u00a0protect my kidneys so I can\u00a0continue to play football for as long as possible, but I do get tired more than I used to.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Looking ahead to the Peterborough March\u00a0March, Sammy says:\u00a0&#8220;We\u00a0can&#8217;t\u00a0wait\u00a0to join the walk.\u00a0Supporting\u00a0more research will increase understanding of kidney conditions and help us prepare for\u00a0what&#8217;s\u00a0to come.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<h2>Caelen&#8217;s story<\/h2>\r\n<p>Just two\u00a0years ago,\u00a0Caelan was diagnosed with a rare kidney condition called Dent&#8217;s disease,\u00a0after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/blood-in-urine\/\">blood<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/proteinuria\/\">protein<\/a> were found in his urine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Sammy says: &#8220;We noticed Caelan&#8217;s\u00a0urine was frothy and took him\u00a0to the doctors where this was tested.\u00a0His results led\u00a0to\u00a0discovering his kidney condition and learning that I am a\u00a0genetic\u00a0carrier of the disease.\u00a0There is no cure to stop it completely. All we can do is try to slow it down\u00a0to protect his kidney function for as long as possible.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;Unfortunately, the\u00a0prescribed medication\u00a0caused Caelan more problems in the short term,\u00a0leading\u00a0his potassium levels to drop dangerously low.\u00a0Our focus now is on lifestyle changes, such as a low-salt diet, to slow kidney decline.\u00a0His <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/kidney-health-information\/stages-of-kidney-disease\/\">kidney function<\/a>\u00a0is currently\u00a0stable. However, he is experiencing\u00a0fatigue and\u00a0anxiety about his future.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;Caelan is obsessed with football and plays every weekend. Unfortunately, he\u00a0cannot\u00a0run as much as he used to because\u00a0of a lack of energy caused by his\u00a0condition.\u00a0He&#8217;s\u00a0a typical lad who enjoys playing with friends, so his confidence has been affected by\u00a0that and\u00a0missing so much school to be in and out of hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;Seeing the impact of Dent&#8217;s disease on his uncles has had a mental effect on him. They&#8217;ve both struggled a lot from the\u00a0toll of needing dialysis and transplants.\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0just hoping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/kidney-health-information\/about-kidney-disease\/what-the-kidneys-do\/\">kidney disease<\/a>\u00a0doesn&#8217;t\u00a0affect Caelan in the same way as he gets older.\u00a0If he does need a transplant, both me and my husband will try to donate a kidney.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;Being a carrier of Dent&#8217;s disease means I have not developed the condition. However, it has still had\u00a0a huge impact\u00a0on my life.\u00a0Not only am I caring for Caelan, but it has also affected our plans to have more children in the future.\u00a0We&#8217;re\u00a0currently going through genetic IVF to try and ensure that we can prevent the gene being passed on again.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" title=\"Caelan Wright\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Caelan-376x500.jpeg\" alt=\"three children and three adults ready for the walk\" width=\"376\" height=\"500\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" title=\"Caelan Wright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Caelan-376x500.jpeg\" alt=\"three children and three adults ready for the walk\" width=\"376\" height=\"500\" \/><\/noscript>\r\n<figcaption>Caelan and family and last years walk<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<h2>Peterborough March\u00a0March<\/h2>\r\n<p>Caelan will walk five miles with his mum,\u00a0dad\u00a0and friends on\u00a0Saturday\u00a028 March\u00a0for this year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/fundraising-events\/peterborough-march-march\/\">Peterborough March\u00a0March<\/a>. It will be the second time\u00a0participating\u00a0for the family, having joined the event in 2025.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Sammy says: &#8220;We loved joining the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/fundraising-events\/peterborough-march-march\/\">Peterborough March\u00a0March<\/a>\u00a0last year. It was lovely being together and seeing everyone else who was taking part. It was good to be outside exercising with our friends and coming together for a\u00a0good cause.\u00a0I think it\u00a0made Caelan feel a little bit special that day.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;He has been really dedicated to raising money for Kidney Research UK, even holding a non-uniform day at\u00a0school\u00a0and making a poster about kidney disease which helped raise more that \u00a3900.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;It can be hard to think about Caelan&#8217;s future, so we try to focus on what we can do today to slow the decline of his kidneys and support research that can make a difference in the future.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Caelan says: &#8220;Raising money through my school was fun and it was nice that lots of people got together to support me. I really enjoyed doing the walk with my friends and family last year so I\u00a0can&#8217;t\u00a0wait to do it again!&#8221;<\/p>\r\n<h3>Join people like Caelan at the Peterborough March
