{"id":161515,"date":"2026-04-10T12:12:46","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T11:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/?post_type=research_grants&#038;p=161515"},"modified":"2026-06-15T14:38:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T13:38:08","slug":"opensafely","status":"publish","type":"research_grants","link":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/research-grants\/opensafely\/","title":{"rendered":"OpenSAFELY"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h2>Key information<\/h2>\r\n<h3><b>What is OpenSAFELY?<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensafely.org\/\">OpenSAFELY<\/a>\u00a0is a secure, privacy\u2011preserving analytics platform that enables approved researchers to analyse NHS electronic health records at scale, without ever accessing identifiable patient information.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>OpenSAFELY\u00a0is now open to non\u2011COVID research, creating a time\u2011limited opportunity to securely analyse near\u2011real\u2011time, whole\u2011population NHS primary care data at unprecedented scale.\u00a0For kidney\u00a0research in particular, this\u00a0unlocks access to GP data that has historically been inaccessible, enabling earlier detection, evaluation of risk tools, health equity analyses, and rapid generation of policy\u2011relevant evidence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>NHS England is now accepting applications for using OpenSAFELY until pm, 30 April 2026. After this date, the initial submission window will close. NHS England will charge project teams an annual licence fee of \u00a325,000 to use the OpenSAFELY Service.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3>Project support<\/h3>\r\n<p>Kidney Research UK is keen to\u00a0support a small number of high\u2011impact driver projects\u00a0that may\u00a0benefit\u00a0from accessing\u00a0the\u00a0OpenSAFELY\u00a0Service in the current submission window.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Support through the 2026\u00a0OpenSAFELY\u00a0fund is\u00a0for\u00a0projects that have submitted an application to use OpenSAFELY in the current window &#8211; by 30 April.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Support is limited to NHS England fees and will not cover any other project costs.<\/li>\r\n<li>Projects do not need to be otherwise funded by Kidney Research UK.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Funding is likely to be competitive and will be\u00a0allocated\u00a0on the basis of\u00a0strategic alignment with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/research\/research-strategy\/\">Kidney Research UK Research Strategy<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h3>Application information<\/h3>\r\n<p>The fund will be open for applications from the\u00a015\u00a0April 2026 to the\u00a015 May 2026.<\/p>\r\n<p>To apply, please send your\u00a0OpenSAFELY\u00a0application as a PDF to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:nurture@kidneyresearchuk.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nurture@kidneyresearchuk.org<\/a>\u00a0with the subject line &#8216;OpenSAFELY 2026 &#8211; Lead Investigator Name&#8217;.<\/p>\r\n<p>Applicants will be notified of outcome by the\u00a010\u00a0June 2026.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Got a question?
