Only his love for Wolverhampton\u00a0Wanderers\u00a0might\u00a0have topped it!\u00a0Last year,\u00a0when we told him\u00a0we&#8217;d\u00a0signed up\u00a0for\u00a0the marathon to raise money,\u00a0he was so pleased.\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0incredibly\u00a0sad\u00a0that he\u00a0won&#8217;t\u00a0be\u00a0there\u00a0to\u00a0watch us complete it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;It has always been an ambition of ours to complete the London Marathon. The fact that\u00a0we&#8217;re\u00a0doing it for\u00a0Dad and Kidney Research UK is so significant to us.\u00a0We&#8217;ll\u00a0be running in his memory, keeping his legacy alive. It will be emotional and there will be tears. I just hope\u00a0we&#8217;ll\u00a0do him proud.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Pam, 65,\u00a0says:\u00a0&#8220;Sam was so happy when he heard that Mandy and Ant had signed up to run the London Marathon in the name of Kidney Research UK. He really was over the moon. He will be watching over them with pride as they run\u00a0on the day.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Ant, 41,\u00a0says: &#8220;Sam was always an advocate of Kidney Research UK and did as much as he\u00a0possibly could\u00a0to make a difference. It meant an awful lot to him.\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0lovely we can do this in his memory.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\t<h2>Kidney disease\u00a0affected our whole family<\/h2>\r\n<p>An unexpected diagnosis of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/kidney-health-information\/living-with-kidney-disease\/kidney-failure\/\">kidney failure<\/a> in 2000 left Sam needing 12 years of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/dialysis\/\">dialysis<\/a>, until he finally received a kidney transplant thanks to Pam, who donated\u00a0a\u00a0kidney to a stranger as part of the\u00a0UK Living Kidney Sharing Scheme.\u00a0As Pam was not a match to donate directly to Sam, the scheme enabled them to match with another\u00a0donor-recipient pair,\u00a0facilitating\u00a0a transplant\u00a0for each patient.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>After 13 years,\u00a0Sam&#8217;s kidney\u00a0sadly\u00a0failed\u00a0in 2025, leaving\u00a0him on\u00a0dialysis\u00a0for several\u00a0months before his death\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0which was the result of complications caused by his illness.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Sam&#8217;s passing has left a huge hole in the lives of\u00a0all who knew him, especially\u00a0his children &#8211; Kiran,\u00a0Jas\u00a0and Mandy\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0and\u00a0wife, Pam.<\/p>\r\n<figure itemscope itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG-20250125-WA0005.jpg\" alt=\"Seven members of the Kang family enjoying a visit to Wolves. If we had a flat tyre, it would always a case of calling Dad!\u00a0I think kidney disease had such\u00a0a big impact\u00a0on him because over time he lost his independence. He was so strong-willed and fought kidney disease so bravely over so many years. However, it really did take its toll in the months before he passed away.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;He\u00a0was always in and out of hospital for dialysis,\u00a0infections\u00a0and other appointments. It became normal. When he went into hospital with another infection\u00a0in January, we just assumed he would be home again soon. It was a complete shock when we received the phone call to say he had passed away. It is hard to accept that he is gone.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Pam, who is a nurse, says:\u00a0&#8220;The effects of kidney disease and being on dialysis caused\u00a0Sam\u00a0a lot of problems with his eyesight and mobility. He\u00a0lost his appetite,\u00a0became increasingly\u00a0tired\u00a0and\u00a0was\u00a0troubled by infections. His health prevented him doing things that he enjoyed and caused him a lot of frustration.\u00a0It\u00a0greatly\u00a0affected\u00a0his mental health\u00a0and had\u00a0a huge impact\u00a0on\u00a0our family.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\t<p>&#8220;We all\u00a0played a role in supporting him and\u00a0I felt I\u00a0became more of a carer than a wife as his health progressively got worse. I\u00a0had to make\u00a0sure he was eating, taking his\u00a0medication\u00a0and attending appointments. That could be an annoyance to him when it all felt too much.\u00a0My life was looking after him, coming to work and taking care of the house and finances. I\u00a0couldn&#8217;t\u00a0have managed without the help of our children.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;There was no time for me. Now all I have is time and I miss him so much.\u00a0Sometimes when\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0at work, I forget that Sam\u00a0won&#8217;t\u00a0be there when I get home. When I walk into the house alone, it hurts a lot.\u00a0His death\u00a0has\u00a0shattered our world.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Mandy says: &#8220;Family occasions are painful without Dad, but we know\u00a0he&#8217;d\u00a0want us to\u00a0enjoy being together. He loved making memories with us and hearing about our adventures.\u00a0We&#8217;ll\u00a0be together\u00a0to mark\u00a0the\u00a0Sikh festival, Vaisakhi, in April,\u00a0but it\u00a0won&#8217;t\u00a0be the same without him.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\t<h2>Sam&#8217;s legacy<\/h2>\r\n<p>Alongside Pam, Sam volunteered as a peer educator for Kidney Research UK,\u00a0raising awareness of kidney disease and the importance of organ donation, with a focus on South Asian communities. The couple, who are Sikhs, spent time campaigning in many community locations, including\u00a0Gurdwaras across the West Midlands.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>People from South Asian communities often\u00a0face longer waiting times\u00a0for kidney transplants\u00a0compared to\u00a0white patients,\u00a0due to a shortage of donors from minority ethnic groups. Having waited 12 years for a kidney transplant himself,\u00a0educating his community was particularly important to Sam.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Pam says:\u00a0&#8220;Sam was\u00a0very happy\u00a0to volunteer. He\u00a0didn&#8217;t\u00a0want anyone else to have to go through what he had.\u00a0It can be\u00a0difficult for people\u00a0in Asian communities\u00a0to talk openly about illnesses and the\u00a0idea of donating a kidney.\u00a0Sam would speak\u00a0to anyone\u00a0about\u00a0his condition and\u00a0transplant to encourage those conversations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;Being able to speak Punjabi and Hindi meant we could communicate with the whole community.\u00a0When people heard I donated a kidney they\u00a0couldn&#8217;t\u00a0believe it. Seeing me happy and healthy helped people realise that they could also consider organ donation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;We were\u00a0very proud\u00a0of the awareness raising we did. It has helped more people talk about their health and has provided them with steps to protect their kidneys. We\u00a0encouraged\u00a0many people\u00a0to become organ donors which was amazing. Sometimes I wonder how\u00a0we&#8217;ll\u00a0do it! Every time\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0having a difficult\u00a0training\u00a0run, I hear Dad&#8217;s voice in my head pushing me on. I talk to him more\u00a0on my runs\u00a0than\u00a0at any\u00a0other time. Thinking of him will keep us going on the day.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;As much as this is for Dad,\u00a0we&#8217;re\u00a0also running to celebrate Mum. Kidney disease has had\u00a0a huge impact\u00a0on her life too\u00a0and\u00a0we&#8217;re\u00a0so fortunate to have her.\u00a0She&#8217;s\u00a0an amazing role model and\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0incredible what she has\u00a0done for Dad. We want to volunteer and keep raising money in memory of Dad. We owe it to him to keep supporting\u00a0kidney awareness. It helps\u00a0us to keep his memory\u00a0alive.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re\u00a0not the only family to be going through this. If there is anything we can do to help others, then we want to do it.\u00a0We had no idea about kidney disease before Dad needed dialysis\u00a0for\u00a0the first time.
