People\u00a0living in Scotland\u00a0who have\u00a0primary IgA nephropathy<\/a> (IgAN) will be able to access a new targeted treatment\u00a0on the NHS\u00a0following a decision announced this week.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

Kidney Research UK\u00a0ensured\u00a0patients’\u00a0comments\u00a0were considered during appraisal of the treatment – called budesonide (Kinpeygo\u00ae) – by the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC). It will be made available for patients\u00a0who lose at least\u00a01g of protein\u00a0in their urine per day.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

IgAN\u00a0is a condition where the kidneys gradually fail,\u00a0eventually leading to dialysis<\/a> or a kidney transplant<\/a>.\u00a0Budesonide has been shown to slow down the decline of kidney function in patients with IgAN who were also being treated with renin angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitors.\u00a0The decision could help people with\u00a0IgAN\u00a0in Scotland\u00a0to delay, or\u00a0potentially\u00a0even avoid, kidney failure\u00a0and the need for dialysis or a kidney transplant,\u00a0in line with access to the treatment for patients in England.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

“This is\u00a0good news\u00a0for patients\u00a0with IgA nephropathy\u00a0living in Scotland\u00a0and should\u00a0give them a better chance of slowing the progression of their disease,” said Alison Railton, Kidney Research UK’s director of policy and public affairs.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n
