{"id":162089,"date":"2026-06-03T05:00:27","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T04:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/?p=162089"},"modified":"2026-06-09T13:34:50","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T12:34:50","slug":"teenage-newcastle-united-fan-feels-support-of-local-community-after-shock-kidney-failure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/2026\/06\/03\/teenage-newcastle-united-fan-feels-support-of-local-community-after-shock-kidney-failure\/","title":{"rendered":"Teenage Newcastle United fan feels support of local community after shock kidney failure"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n\r\n\t\t\r\n\t<p>A 14-year-old boy\u00a0from the Northeast has been overwhelmed by the support of his local community\u00a0&#8211; including a visit from Newcastle United players, Joelinton and Kieran\u00a0Trippier\u00a0&#8211; as he\u00a0learns to live with\u00a0kidney disease.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Charlie Denholm, from Washington, Tyne and Wear,\u00a0found himself needing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/dialysis\/\">dialysis<\/a> treatment after his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/kidney-health-information\/living-with-kidney-disease\/kidney-failure\/\">kidneys unexpectedly failed<\/a> just before Christmas\u00a0last year\u00a0due to a genetic form of kidney disease.\u00a0Already affected by type\u00a01 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/diabetes\/\">diabetes<\/a>, Charlie is now doing his best to navigate life with both conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<figure itemscope itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Charlie-Denholm-with-Kieran-Trippier-and-Joelinton-Newcastle-United-players.jpg\" alt=\"Charlie in hospital with Kieran Trippier and Joelinton (Newcastle United players)\" height=\"2048\" width=\"1536\" title=\"Charlie Denholm with Kieran Trippier and Joelinton (Newcastle United players)\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Charlie-Denholm-with-Kieran-Trippier-and-Joelinton-Newcastle-United-players.jpg\" alt=\"Charlie in hospital with Kieran Trippier and Joelinton (Newcastle United players)\" height=\"2048\" width=\"1536\" title=\"Charlie Denholm with Kieran Trippier and Joelinton (Newcastle United players)\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/noscript>\r\n\t\t<figcaption>Charlie with Newcastle Utd players Kieran Trippier and Joelinton <\/figcaption>\r\n\t<\/figure>\r\n\t<p>His\u00a0guardian, Fiona Denholm, says: &#8220;It has been hard for us\u00a0all,\u00a0but Charlie has handled everything so well.\u00a0He takes it all in his stride despite the challenges and frustrations.\u00a0He&#8217;s\u00a0a sporty kid and\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0difficult for him\u00a0not being able to play competitive football because of his dialysis.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re so thankful for the support we&#8217;ve had from family, friends, his healthcare team, school\u00a0and\u00a0community organisations like the Newcastle United Foundation &#8211; who recently\u00a0visited Charlie&#8217;s dialysis unit, invited the children for a stadium tour and allowed them to train with the under 21 side.\u00a0It\u00a0was\u00a0a massive boost for them.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Charlie says:\u00a0&#8220;I&#8217;m\u00a0a big Newcastle United fan and it was\u00a0really cool\u00a0meeting\u00a0Joelinton and\u00a0Trippier.\u00a0They asked me how my treatment was going and told me to keep up the\u00a0good work\u00a0until my transplant. They\u00a0weren&#8217;t\u00a0too pleased when they found out my favourite player is\u00a0Bruno Guimar\u00e3es though!\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;I\u00a0enjoyed the stadium tour and playing with the under 21s\u00a0too. I hope when I have a kidney transplant,\u00a0I&#8217;ll\u00a0be able to join a football team again and take part in the\u00a0Transplant Games.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Charlie,\u00a0Fiona\u00a0and their family are\u00a0offering their own support to fellow kidney patients by joining the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/fundraising-events\/newcastle-bridges-walk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Newcastle Bridges Walk<\/a>\u00a0on Sunday 7 June &#8211; fundraising for Kidney Research UK\u00a0alongside hundreds of the charity&#8217;s supporters.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\t<h2>Whirlwind diagnosis<\/h2>\r\n<p>Charlie and his family first realised he\u00a0was not well when he began struggling with extreme fatigue.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Fiona says: &#8220;He\u00a0didn&#8217;t\u00a0have the energy\u00a0you&#8217;d\u00a0expect of a teenage boy and was exhausted all the time. I knew something\u00a0wasn&#8217;t\u00a0right, so I took him to the GP\u00a0where he had a blood test. Soon after we received a phone call telling us to get Charlie to hospital\u00a0immediately. His kidneys had failed and he needed urgent treatment.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;It was a real shock. We had no idea Charlie was this unwell and had never known anyone in\u00a0a similar situation. All the talk of transplants and dialysis was overwhelming. We were in disbelief.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>It\u00a0transpired\u00a0that Charlie had unknowingly been living with a genetic kidney disease which had caused his kidneys to slowly deteriorate since birth. By the time he found out, his kidneys had already failed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Fiona says: &#8220;There was nothing we could do to prevent Charlie needing dialysis. It has been\u00a0very hard. Finding out it is a\u00a0genetic condition is scary, as it means Charlie&#8217;s younger brother, Ollie, could also be affected.\u00a0We&#8217;re\u00a0currently having him tested to see whether that is the case. If we do get\u00a0bad news, we hope an earlier diagnosis will mean we can take steps to protect his kidneys for longer.&#8221;<\/p>\r\n\t<h2>Adapting to dialysis<\/h2>\r\n<p>Charlie receives dialysis twice\u00a0a week at\u00a0Great North Children&#8217;s Hospital\u00a0in Newcastle, meaning he can\u00a0now\u00a0only attend school three days\u00a0a week.\u00a0<\/p>\r\nFiona says: &#8220;It was a whirlwind at first but the staff on the renal ward have been so welcoming and answered all our questions. Charlie&#8217;s dialysis unit is so vibrant. The nurses are always putting on activities for the kids. It&#8217;s like a family really. There is even a therapy dog called Daisy!<br \/>\r\n\r\n<p>&#8220;Charlie&#8217;s school have been brilliant too,\u00a0putting\u00a0in place a safety plan for him.\u00a0We&#8217;ve\u00a0had so much support from people. Everyone has been so kind. That has been so important for me, as a single\u00a0working\u00a0parent\u00a0supporting their child through dialysis.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;Our family have been immensely supportive.\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0so grateful to my parents, Liz and Ken, my sister,\u00a0Julie, nephews, Sam and James, my son Scott\u00a0with his children,\u00a0Emilia and Joshua. Without them,\u00a0we&#8217;d\u00a0struggle to cope.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Charlie says: &#8220;I&#8217;ve\u00a0found adjusting to dialysis okay. The nurses from Charlie&#8217;s dialysis unit\u00a0join every year.\u00a0We&#8217;ll\u00a0be there with Charlie&#8217;s younger brother, Ollie, my\u00a0sister\u00a0and my\u00a0son and two grandchildren.\u00a0We&#8217;re\u00a0all looking forward to it.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re\u00a0over the moon with how much support\u00a0we&#8217;ve\u00a0had and the money that has been raised so far. People have been so generous. We hope it will make\u00a0a big difference\u00a0for patients.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Charlie says: &#8220;It&#8217;s\u00a0nice that so many of my family will be walking with me on the day.
