But what nobody\u00a0realised was that I was fatigued\u00a0because my\u00a0kidneys were failing.\u00a0I now recognise\u00a0several signs from my childhood that, with more awareness,\u00a0could have been\u00a0identified\u00a0long before my kidneys failed in\u00a02012.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;I want\u00a0to share\u00a0my\u00a0story\u00a0so that other people\u00a0are aware of\u00a0warning signs and\u00a0can\u00a0seek help at an earlier\u00a0stage. I hope that will mean\u00a0steps can be taken to prevent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/kidney-health-information\/living-with-kidney-disease\/kidney-failure\/\">kidney failure<\/a>, removing the need for\u00a0people to have\u00a0treatments such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/dialysis\/\">dialysis<\/a>\u00a0or a transplant.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve\u00a0been receiving\u00a0dialysis three times a week, for the past five years while I wait for a second transplant.\u00a0There is not much fun in my life now, but my mind and spirit are unbroken. I try not to let what is happening in my body\u00a0get\u00a0to my head. It is hard sometimes, but I try to stay strong.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\t<h2>I wish\u00a0I&#8217;d\u00a0known these signs of kidney disease\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n<p>In the 15 years before her kidneys failed, Eso experienced recurrent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/symptoms-of-kidney-disease\/\">symptoms<\/a> which, in hindsight, were signs of her kidney disease.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>She says: &#8220;When you come from a healthy family, it is easy to be ignorant to health problems. There are always ways to explain away symptoms which seem small at the time. Along with fatigue, I&#8217;d had puffiness in my face and swollen ankles. However, we just assumed it was weight gain. After my kidneys failed, I realised I&#8217;d also not been passing enough urine, and my shortness of breath was because my body was retaining water. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d\u00a0had a lot of urine infections growing up\u00a0and\u00a0my lack of awareness of kidney health meant I was doing harm in how I tried to prevent those infections.\u00a0I often held\u00a0my urine to avoid using public toilets as I thought a lack of cleanliness in those restrooms could be a contributing factor. This meant restricting\u00a0the amount of water I drank outside of the home.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;As my kidney problems remained undiagnosed, there was no opportunity to prevent or delay kidney failure. I\u00a0had just graduated from university and was working as a teacher, then\u00a0suddenly found myself in hospital needing dialysis and a transplant. It broke me.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\t<h2>Treatment for kidney failure<\/h2>\r\n<p>Eso needed dialysis for\u00a0a year<b>\u00a0<\/b>before receiving a transplant from her mother\u00a0in<b>\u00a0<\/b>2013.\u00a0She says: &#8220;Mum gave me my life back but sadly after\u00a0seven\u00a0years<b>\u00a0<\/b>my transplant failed when I caught the Covid-19 virus in 2020. It was traumatic to be told I needed dialysis again.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<figure itemscope itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\">\r\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/IMG_4679.jpeg\" alt=\"Eso, in hospital when she was younger. It has also prevented me from pursuing my ambitions as a singer. The treatment has limited my life in many ways, making it harder to travel and socialise with friends. I try not to think about when my transplant will happen. I just keep faith that it will happen eventually. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;While I wait, I want to inspire others\u00a0going through similar challenges and raise awareness through my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@eso.kidney.alive\">Tik Tok page<\/a> and\u00a0Eso Kidney Alive\u00a0Foundation in Nigeria.\u00a0When I was first unwell, I worried about the stigma and people seeing me as fragile. Now\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0really glad\u00a0I\u00a0opened up\u00a0to talk about my experiences.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;It has given me the chance to talk about the importance of organ donation, particularly increasing the number of donors from Black communities. There are so many cultural and religious beliefs that put people off. I would probably have shared similar feelings without having been through it myself. Mum was in her 50s when she donated a kidney to me. She&#8217;s still healthy and I hope that shows that being a donor is something we can all consider.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;Organ donation is life changing. There is so much I want to do once I&#8217;ve had my second transplant.\u00a0I&#8217;d\u00a0love to get back to teaching and singing.
