{"id":162164,"date":"2026-06-05T16:00:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T15:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/?p=162164"},"modified":"2026-06-05T16:00:45","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T15:00:45","slug":"exceptional-kidney-advocate-champions-early-diagnosis-and-organ-donation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/2026\/06\/05\/exceptional-kidney-advocate-champions-early-diagnosis-and-organ-donation\/","title":{"rendered":"Exceptional kidney advocate champions early diagnosis and organ donation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t\t\n\t<p>A kidney transplant recipient who spent ten years on dialysis, is now dedicating her time to spare others from a lifetime of challenging treatments.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hilaria Asumu, from Manchester,\u00a0has made it her mission to\u00a0raise awareness of kidney disease,\u00a0becoming a community ambassador and blood pressure volunteer with Kidney Research UK.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ever since receiving her own transplant in 2018, Hilaria has been raising awareness of\u00a0the life-changing impact of organ donation,\u00a0encouraging\u00a0people to consider becoming donors.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Following dedicated training from Kidney Research UK, she also offers free blood pressure checks in her community, helping people to understand if they are at risk of kidney problems and encouraging them to seek healthcare that could lead to an early diagnosis. This is vitally important, as high blood pressure can both increase your risk of developing kidney disease and be a sign of kidney disease itself. Identifying problems before someone reaches kidney failure could delay or even remove the need for dialysis or a transplant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure itemscope itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\">\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/shared-image-42.jpg\" alt=\"Hilaria, is wearing Kidney Research UK brand t-shirt and purple fleece. She is giving a talk and standing at a microphone\" height=\"1043\" width=\"1600\" title=\"Hilaria Asumu\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/noscript>\n\t\t<figcaption>Hilaria Asumu<\/figcaption>\n\t<\/figure>\n\t<p>Hilaria, 53, says:\u00a0&#8220;I come from Nigeria originally and we\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0tend to speak about illness or death.\u00a0Becoming an organ donor is not a topic that is often considered, meaning there are a lack of donors from the Black community.\u00a0That&#8217;s\u00a0why it\u00a0is\u00a0important to me to share my story,\u00a0to encourage people to think differently.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People in my community, especially men,\u00a0are reluctant to visit the doctor when they are concerned about their own health. A lot of people have family living abroad, meaning they\u00a0are financially supporting extended family, in addition to their own household. There is a pressure to avoid being unwell\u00a0or visiting the doctor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It means kidney disease often goes undiagnosed until people&#8217;s kidneys have failed and dialysis or a transplant is needed. That&#8217;s why I regularly go to community events and places like churches, mosques or the local supermarket, to take health information and carry out blood pressure checks for people who may not seek it out themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If we can\u00a0identify\u00a0people&#8217;s high blood pressure and\u00a0encourage them to see their GP and\u00a0get\u00a0an earlier diagnosis, it means steps can be taken to protect their kidneys.\u00a0It\u00a0is an amazing thing to be a part of.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\t<h2>Hilaria&#8217;s story<\/h2>\n<p>Hilaria is all too familiar with the harsh realities of kidney failure. When she had a miscarriage at 22 weeks pregnant in 2008, she was rushed to hospital by her husband. She woke up in intensive care to find that she had been in a coma, having experienced two cardiac arrests, multiple organ failure and septicaemia (a serious infection of the bloodstream). \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hilaria says: &#8220;It was completely disorienting. I couldn&#8217;t understand where I was or what was happening. I don&#8217;t have a family history of health problems and I had been perfectly fine until this time. To be told I had kidney disease was devastating. We were all crying and wondering what it would mean for my life.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hilaria needed emergency dialysis\u00a0which helped her kidney function\u00a0bounce back.\u00a0However, in\u00a02010<b>\u00a0<\/b>another\u00a0miscarriage left\u00a0her\u00a0in a\u00a0second coma with septicaemia and a collapsed lung.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hilaria says: &#8220;My husband was told that if I didn&#8217;t come out of my coma by a certain date, that they would have to turn off my life support machine. Amazingly, I woke up on the day they were going to do that.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;d\u00a0survived, but this time I was told\u00a0I&#8217;d\u00a0need dialysis until a transplant became available.\u00a0That took ten years\u00a0because I had\u00a0a high level\u00a0of antibodies, making it difficult to find a match.\u00a0None of my family were able to donate and I thought my life was over.\u00a0I cried every day because I hated dialysis. It restricted my life a lot.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure itemscope itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\">\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/shared-image-44.jpg\" alt=\"Hilaria with a group of eight women.\" height=\"1200\" width=\"1600\" title=\"Hilaria Asumu\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/shared-image-44.jpg\" alt=\"Hilaria with a group of eight women.\" height=\"1200\" width=\"1600\" title=\"Hilaria Asumu\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/noscript>\n\t<\/figure>\n\t<h2>Receiving a transplant\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>After a decade of waiting, Hilaria finally received the phone call she had been yearning for &#8211; to tell her a kidney had been found.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hilaria says: &#8220;I felt every emotion. I was stunned, excited and euphoric. I didn&#8217;t know what to say or what to do. All I heard was that I needed to get to hospital. Waiting so long had caused me to lose my faith. I&#8217;d prayed, begged and promised. Nothing was working. I thought God had abandoned me. That day I got my faith back.&#8221; \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Once I&#8217;d had the transplant it felt like this huge cloud had gone. I no longer needed dialysis and could get back to my life: being a mum to my two<b>\u00a0<\/b>children, travelling and\u00a0enjoying life,\u00a0without being attached to a machine. I\u00a0can&#8217;t\u00a0describe the joy.\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0hard to put into words just how grateful I am to my donor and their family.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\t<h2>Becoming a volunteer<\/h2>\n<p>Hilaria\u00a0immediately\u00a0wanted to make a difference for others, becoming an ambassador for NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) and Kidney Research UK.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She says: &#8220;I wanted to give back and talk to people in my community. I love sharing my story.\u00a0I regularly go to churches and mosques to speak about my experiences. I even got permission from my local ASDA to\u00a0speak with customers over the\u00a0tannoy\u00a0system.\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0rewarding to build an understanding of kidney disease, that hopefully means more people will receive an earlier diagnosis or consider organ donation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When\u00a0Kidney Research UK\u00a0developed\u00a0the blood pressure volunteering role, I was so keen to be involved. People are often surprised if their blood pressure shows as being high.\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0not a doctor, but I can recommend people see their GP\u00a0and\u00a0provide\u00a0information to support them in looking after their health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I find volunteering so rewarding and there is still a lot of work to do.\u00a0I&#8217;d\u00a0love for more people to volunteer. You\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0need any experience &#8211; just passion! You will be supported by Kidney Research UK in your role.\u00a0When you get into volunteering, you\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0look back.\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0so satisfying.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t<a
