{"id":162248,"date":"2026-06-09T13:30:18","date_gmt":"2026-06-09T12:30:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/?p=162248"},"modified":"2026-06-09T13:30:45","modified_gmt":"2026-06-09T12:30:45","slug":"teenage-kidney-patient-opens-up-about-life-as-a-young-person-on-dialysis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/2026\/06\/09\/teenage-kidney-patient-opens-up-about-life-as-a-young-person-on-dialysis\/","title":{"rendered":"Teenage kidney patient opens-up about life as a young person on dialysis"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n\r\n\t\t\r\n\t<p>A\u00a0kidney patient\u00a0from\u00a0Hackney,\u00a0London,\u00a0is\u00a0speaking out about what it is like to be a young adult on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/dialysis\/\">dialysis<\/a>,\u00a0as he tries to\u00a0help others feel less isolated.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Since being diagnosed with chronic kidney disease as a baby, 18-year-old Delano Joseph-Myers has experienced two failed kidney transplants, spending more than half his life as a dialysis patient. <\/p>\r\n<p>As he waits for a third <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/transplantation\/\">kidney transplant<\/a>, Delano\u00a0attends\u00a0his dialysis unit\u00a0three times a week, for four hours each session.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\t<blockquote><p>Delano says: &#8220;Being the only young adult on my dialysis unit can be lonely. I have family and friends to support me. However, you only really understand kidney disease when you live with it yourself. In the past, I&#8217;ve tended not to share how I&#8217;ve been feeling, but I want to tell my story to help others understand they&#8217;re not the only ones going through this. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;Speaking openly on my social media pages has helped me connect with many young people living with kidney disease. His kidneys were failing and he was transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital\u00a0(GOSH).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>By\u00a0his fourth birthday,\u00a0he needed to\u00a0start\u00a0dialysis. This treatment continued until he\u00a0received a kidney transplant from a deceased donor at five years old. That kidney functioned for five years, before failing\u00a0in 2018\u00a0when Delano was ten.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>By the time he started secondary school, Delano was back on dialysis,\u00a0waiting for a second transplant. I spent more of my life in hospital than I did in school.\u00a0I was there three times a week for dialysis, for four hours each session.\u00a0I&#8217;d\u00a0often have to leave school halfway through the day to go for treatment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;There was a six-month period when my blood pressure was extremely low, and I needed to stay in hospital for dialysis six days a week. I was away from school for so long that rumours started circulating\u00a0with other kids\u00a0that I had died.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;I\u00a0had\u00a0school\u00a0lessons\u00a0at\u00a0GOSH.\u00a0However, the treatment\u00a0was\u00a0so draining, making it hard to learn. I\u00a0didn&#8217;t\u00a0do well in my GCSEs because of how much I was affected.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;I felt like the only person going through something like this. I didn&#8217;t know anyone in my day-to-day life who was affected by similar health problems. It was very isolating.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\t<h2>What is it like being a young person on dialysis?<\/h2>\r\n<p>In 2023,\u00a0Delano finally received a second kidney transplant,\u00a0at 15 years old.\u00a0However, within two years, this kidney had also failed, leaving him back on dialysis.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Delano says: &#8220;It was very up and down with my second kidney. It\u00a0didn&#8217;t\u00a0wake up straight away and\u00a0later\u00a0my body began to reject the kidney, causing it to become infected and swollen.\u00a0It failed and\u00a0I&#8217;ve\u00a0been back on dialysis ever since.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;It was gutting but there was nothing I could do. In the end, doctors had to remove the kidney because the swelling was causing me a lot of pain. It was a relief when it was gone. I&#8217;m on the waiting list again now, hoping for a third kidney transplant.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;Being a dialysis patient\u00a0isn&#8217;t\u00a0easy. It is hard juggling school and work against needing to have\u00a0four-hour-long sessions,\u00a0three times a week.\u00a0There are days when I want to give up or not get out of bed, but after I take a minute, I\u00a0have to\u00a0keep going.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s\u00a0hard when there\u00a0isn&#8217;t\u00a0enough understanding of kidney disease in the wider community.\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0a hidden illness and people can mistake my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/symptoms-of-kidney-disease\/\">symptoms<\/a> for laziness. They just\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0get it. Just because we look &#8216;normal&#8217;\u00a0doesn&#8217;t\u00a0mean we are healthy on the inside. If people see that I can do it, maybe they&#8217;ll realise they can too. I&#8217;ve been living with kidney disease since I was two weeks old, but I don&#8217;t let it stop me from living life as best I can. I enjoy being creative and have designed my own clothing brand. I&#8217;m also starting a career as a sports coach alongside my delivery riding jobs\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;I hope I&#8217;ll be able to have a transplant soon, although I&#8217;m aware of the lack of kidney donors from Black communities. Maybe if people see what patients like me are going through, it&#8217;ll help the consider becoming organ donors to improve others&#8217; lives. \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>&#8220;My wish is that one day I can have a kidney transplant that will last me a lifetime and allow me to fully pursue my dreams.
