{"id":162326,"date":"2026-06-12T13:37:56","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T12:37:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/?p=162326"},"modified":"2026-06-12T13:37:56","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T12:37:56","slug":"celebrating-our-first-kidneyversary-at-london-bridges-walk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/2026\/06\/12\/celebrating-our-first-kidneyversary-at-london-bridges-walk\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating our first kidneyversary at London Bridges Walk"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t\t\n\t<p>A year on from a life-changing kidney\u00a0donation between\u00a0two\u00a0childhood friends\u00a0living in\u00a0Portsmouth, the pair\u00a0are taking\u00a0on a major\u00a0charity fundraising event\u00a0in London\u00a0to celebrate their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/support\/fundraise\/kidneyversary\/\">kidneyversary<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In May 2025, 64-year-old David Eves donated a kidney to his friend Dave, 67, who\u00a0needed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/dialysis\/\">dialysis<\/a>\u00a0for more than six years after\u00a0his kidneys failed because of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/polycystic-kidney-disease\/\">polycystic kidney disease<\/a> (PKD).\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure itemscope itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\">\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/David-and-Dave.jpg\" alt=\"Picture of two men, sat next to each other. They look like they&#039;re on an evening out and the lighting is green.\" height=\"1200\" width=\"1600\" title=\"David Eves and Dave\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/noscript>\n\t\t<figcaption>Friends, David and Dave<\/figcaption>\n\t<\/figure>\n\t<p>They are walking together alongside hundreds of people at this year&#8217;s Kidney Research UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/fundraising-events\/london-bridges-walk\/\">London Bridges Walk<\/a> on Saturday 4 July, celebrating an important milestone and raising awareness of kidney disease to support others.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>David says: &#8220;Knowing Dave will be by my side at the walk, no longer tied to\u00a0a\u00a0dialysis\u00a0machine, means everything. He&#8217;s back where he was ten years ago, albeit a little older.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Donating a kidney has been an overwhelmingly positive experience. It hasn&#8217;t impacted my life. I am fully fit and can still do everything I enjoyed before. Most importantly, Dave is here to share those experiences with me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m really looking forward to connecting with others\u00a0at the walk\u00a0who&#8217;ve been through similar transplant experiences. That sense of community and seeing hundreds of people all wearing a purple Kidney Research UK T-shirt, will be fantastic.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\t<h2>A 50-year friendship<\/h2>\n<p>David first met Dave back in 1974, when the pair were teenagers\u00a0in Scarborough. David&#8217;s mum was in a relationship with Dave&#8217;s dad and they lived together as\u00a0a blended family of seven children for\u00a0three years\u00a0until the relationship ended.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>David says: &#8220;I&#8217;ve known Dave, my &#8220;almost-brother&#8221;, for most of my life. As the eldest two of the children, Dave and I were the closest and shared a bedroom. We just seemed to click.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dave joined the Royal Navy at 16 and was my inspiration to join too.\u00a0Eventually, we both settled in Portsmouth with our wives, Lorna and Karen\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0who are also great friends\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0and our children.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When Dave&#8217;s maternal grandmother died from PKD in 1984, he was tested and discovered he had inherited the condition.\u00a0It is a disease which has affected many of Dave&#8217;s family members, including his mother, Anne, sister, Tracy, daughter, Katt, and\u00a0two granddaughters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over time,\u00a0Dave&#8217;s\u00a0own\u00a0health gradually deteriorated. He became increasingly unwell and spent more than six years receiving dialysis.\u00a0I don&#8217;t think I fully comprehended the gravity of the situation. It wasn&#8217;t until I was watching the medical drama Grey&#8217;s Anatomy and saw an episode about transplants and living donors that I started considering becoming one for Dave.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure itemscope itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\">\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/David-and-Dave-post-transplant.jpg\" alt=\"David id in a hospital bed and friend Dave, is standing next to him\" height=\"2182\" width=\"1920\" title=\"David and Dave post-transplant\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/David-and-Dave-post-transplant.jpg\" alt=\"David id in a hospital bed and friend Dave, is standing next to him\" height=\"2182\" width=\"1920\" title=\"David and Dave post-transplant\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/noscript>\n\t\t<figcaption>David and Dave post-transplant<\/figcaption>\n\t<\/figure>\n\t<h2>Becoming a living kidney donor<\/h2>\n<p>In February 2022, aged 60, David approached Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth to start the donation process and found he was a direct match for Dave.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>David says: &#8220;Unfortunately Dave&#8217;s wife, Karen, had been told she was unable to be a kidney donor, so I was very happy to put myself forward. Tests showed Dave and I were a match and by April 2023, I&#8217;d been signed off to donate. Unfortunately, at that time, Dave was too poorly for surgery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It took another two years for Dave to become fit enough for the transplant. During that time, he underwent a quadruple heart bypass and had one of his kidneys removed to make space for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/transplantation\/\">transplanted kidney<\/a>. Weighing 7kg, it was massively enlarged by the disease. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;More than three years after first enquiring about becoming a donor, the transplant finally took place. My recovery was much better than expected. The pain was manageable and after two weeks of taking it easy, I was back at work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dave&#8217;s recovery was more difficult. When he came out of theatre, something wasn&#8217;t right, so surgeons had to operate to reposition the kidney. For the next six months, he suffered recurrent infections and spent more time in hospital than at home. In November 2025, he had an operation on his urethra which helped to stabilise him.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\t<h2>Our first kidneyversary<\/h2>\n<p>On 21 May 2026, David and Dave celebrated their one-year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/support\/fundraise\/kidneyversary\/\">kidneyversary<\/a> with their wives\u00a0during\u00a0a meal\u00a0at a restaurant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>David says: &#8220;Sitting there, I looked at Dave and thought, &#8216;wow, he&#8217;s turned a corner&#8217;. He looks great. It was a real milestone after such a long journey, with years of tests, waiting and surgical procedures.I feel very fortunate for the exceptional care we received from the transplant team at Queen Alexandra Hospital. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u00a0are\u00a0so close now to reaching our fundraising target for the London Bridges Walk, which will help Kidney Research UK to\u00a0continue shaping the treatment and care of people living with kidney disease.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If my story, one of positivity and hope, helps ease the worries of even one potential donor, then it will all have been
