{"id":162356,"date":"2026-06-15T14:16:34","date_gmt":"2026-06-15T13:16:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/?p=162356"},"modified":"2026-06-15T14:16:34","modified_gmt":"2026-06-15T13:16:34","slug":"routine-blood-test-gave-doctors-opportunity-to-treat-my-kidney-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/2026\/06\/15\/routine-blood-test-gave-doctors-opportunity-to-treat-my-kidney-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"Routine blood test gave doctors opportunity to treat my kidney cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t\t\n\t<p>An aviation management consultant from\u00a0Surrey\u00a0has\u00a0received successful\u00a0surgery to\u00a0remove a tumour,\u00a0after a\u00a0routine blood test\u00a0led to a diagnosis of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/kidney-cancer\/\">kidney cancer<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Chris Bosworth,\u00a058,\u00a0displayed\u00a0no obvious symptoms\u00a0before his\u00a0cancer\u00a0diagnosis, meaning the tumour was unlikely to have been\u00a0identified\u00a0without\u00a0a routine\u00a0annual\u00a0blood test\u00a0at his GP surgery.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He says: &#8220;I&#8217;d\u00a0get a little bit of back ache when mowing the lawn or washing up, but I just put that down to age. I felt fine.\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0so thankful that the cancer was\u00a0identified\u00a0and dealt with quickly. I was\u00a0very lucky\u00a0to avoid the need for treatments like chemotherapy or radiotherapy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I hope that sharing my story\u00a0helps to raise\u00a0awareness of kidney cancer and\u00a0prompts\u00a0other\u00a0people to consider having their own health checked. Early diagnosis is so important\u00a0and can be lifesaving.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\t<h2>Cancer diagnosis<\/h2>\n<p>After a routine annual blood test showed suspected problems with his liver function in 2024, Chris was referred for an ultrasound to investigate further. \u00a0<\/p>\n<figure itemscope itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\">\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Chris-Bosworth-family-2.jpg\" alt=\"Three males sat next to each other on the sofa, mum is sat with her legs across their knees\" height=\"1500\" width=\"2000\" title=\"Chris Bosworth and family 2\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Chris-Bosworth-family-2.jpg\" alt=\"Three males sat next to each other on the sofa, mum is sat with her legs across their knees\" height=\"1500\" width=\"2000\" title=\"Chris Bosworth and family 2\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/noscript>\n\t\t<figcaption>Chris with his family<\/figcaption>\n\t<\/figure>\n\t<p>Chris says: &#8220;I was relieved to be told that my liver was\u00a0&#8216;fine for a man of my age&#8217;.\u00a0However,\u00a0the technician\u00a0then asked if\u00a0I&#8217;d\u00a0ever had problems with my kidneys. I\u00a0hadn&#8217;t, but it\u00a0quickly\u00a0became obvious that he knew there was a problem now.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I received a phone call the next day to arrange an appointment with a specialist kidney consultant the following week. The speed at which everything was moving told me it was bad news and I resigned myself to the fact it might be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/conditions-symptoms\/kidney-cancer\/\">cancer<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The appointment came and my consultant showed me a 7cm tumour growing in my right kidney, which was visible from my scan. It needed to be removed urgently. It was completely surreal being told that. It felt like it was happening around me and I was just watching, even though I was the one in the chair getting that news.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The hardest part was sharing my diagnosis with my family. My dad died of cancer when\u00a0I was\u00a018. He was just 42.\u00a0Telling my mum and sister\u00a0about my illness\u00a0was\u00a0very difficult.\u00a0My wife was with me at my diagnosis, but we also had to explain everything to our two sons.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\t<h2>Kidney cancer treatment<\/h2>\n<p>At the beginning of 2025, Chris underwent\u00a0surgery to remove his cancerous kidney.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He says: &#8220;I hadn&#8217;t spent a night in hospital since I was born, so it was a brand-new experience for me. The surgery took longer than planned because I had a reaction to the anaesthetic and it proved more difficult than expected to remove my kidney. It was especially tough on my wife, who spent six hours waiting for the surgery to be complete. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thankfully, it was\u00a0a success, and I was discharged after two days. I took about four months off\u00a0work, living a quieter life while I recovered.\u00a0Today everything is pretty much as it was pre-diagnosis.\u00a0The only difference is that I\u00a0am <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyresearchuk.org\/kidney-health-information\/about-kidney-disease\/living-with-one-kidney\/\">living with\u00a0one kidney<\/a>. However, my kidney function is stable, and it\u00a0doesn&#8217;t\u00a0hold me back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In fact, coming out of the other side of my diagnosis and treatment has given me a new lease of life. You do look at it as a second chance. It has created more energy and urgency for me to do things\u00a0in life\u00a0that I have\u00a0been meaning to for some time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This experience has made me much more aware of my own health. However, I was taken aback by the response. People left comments about how they now felt able to share their own personal experiences, while others told me it had prompted them to get their health checked. It was very humbling.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I realised that being open about my story had helped raise awareness and supported others to feel comfortable in talking about what they have been through. It made me feel that I could do something more to help.
