He managed his condition for 25 years and got on with life as best he could. But in the space of a year, since he started dialysis, Lee&#8217;s life has become totally unrecognisable. He hasn&#8217;t been able to work, which has left him struggling financially and emotionally too. Lee&#8217;s younger sister Vicky also had diabetes and was on dialysis for three and a half years before she died seven years ago at the age of 35. Now,\u00a0the\u00a051 year old\u00a0is thought to be one of the UK&#8217;s longest surviving dialysis patients, after more than three decades receiving the treatment.\u00a0&#8220;The whole transplant experience could not have gone more wrong,&#8221; she says. &#8220;The kidney never worked properly, and I was in hospital for four months until it was removed. It was horrific. A professional counsellor is helping make a difference and he continues to show fighting spirit. Kidney disease has taken away Charlie&#8217;s ability to be a typical teenager, meet with friends and enjoy his sports. Patients don&#8217;t need the worry of wondering if or when theirs will fail. They should be for life.<\/li>\n<li>We want to reduce the burden of treatment and improve patients&#8217; quality of life. Treatments are incredibly disruptive and can make people feel very unwell. But this can be improved through research into better medical solutions.<\/li>\n<li>We want everyone to have equal access to treatments and care. 32% of people on the waiting list for a kidney transplant are from minority ethnic backgrounds. This isn&#8217;t good enough.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t<h2>How your donation can transform treatments<\/h2>\n\t<h4>Your donations will go to crucial research into new and better treatments for kidney disease.<\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\" tabindex=\"-1\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-0\">Helping transplants last longer<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-0\" aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-0\"><i>Collapse<\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>As part of the ADMIRE study &#8216;Assessing Donor kidneys and Monitoring Transplant REcipients&#8217;, Dr Maria Kaisar and her team at the University of Oxford will analyse blood samples from donors to develop a mathematical model to predict how well a donor kidney will function after transplant.<\/p>\n<p>The Oxford team, in collaboration with researchers at the University of Nottingham and University College London, will also develop MRI scanning methods to assess donor organs before and after transplant. This study could help doctors accurately assess kidneys, transplant only the best and identify suitable kidneys from donors previously deemed too high risk.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\" tabindex=\"-1\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-1\">Understanding how dialysis affects blood vessels and causes heart disease<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-1\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-1\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Dr Isaac Chung is investigating why young adults on dialysis are more likely to die of a heart attack or stroke than their healthy peers.<\/p>\n<p>Isaac is using ultrasound tests to study blood vessel changes in kidney patients, to understand how they progress and the risk factors underpinning them. This work may reveal new ways to prevent heart attacks and strokes in the future.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\" tabindex=\"-1\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-2\">Developing a new scan to spot and monitor dialysis side effects<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-2\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-2\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Professor James Burton and his team at the University of Leicester are testing whether a new MRI technique can be used to accurately measure heart scarring in patients on dialysis. This may reveal a new way to monitor heart scarring caused by dialysis and help us find ways to prevent sudden, and potentially fatal problems with the heart.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\" tabindex=\"-1\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-3\">A new simple urine test to spot kidney transplant problems<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-3\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-3\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Professor Tim Bowen and his team at Cardiff University are working on a new test that could predict delayed graft function &#8211; where the transplanted kidney fails to function straight after transplant &#8211; without the need for a biopsy.
